About

CaminArte is a way to walk La Palma from one sculpture to the next. Gustavo Díaz and Herrumbre Vivo place their recycled art in the landscape, and the site links the pieces into 5 routes (Los Cancajos, Fuencaliente, Los Llanos de Aridane, Puntallana and Tazacorte) with 13 stops on a map of the whole island. Every artwork has its own page and every route has its QR code. Routes and news are also published through an API that Herrumbre Vivo Arte uses.

Highlights

Routes in 3D

Each route opens over the island's terrain with a tilted camera saved by hand from the panel. The line is curved, the stops are numbered, and the map popup steps to the previous or the next stop.

Artworks in five languages

The 13 published artworks have a page with a photo and text in Spanish, English, French and German, with Italian on the way.

Route editor on the map

From the panel the client adds routes and artworks, orders the stops and draws each route section by section on the map itself. Photos are converted to WebP on upload.

One API, two websites

/api/rutas.json and /api/noticias.json are public and also feed herrumbrevivoarte.com. A route is edited once and appears on both sites.

Built With

  • Go standard library + SQLite: server-rendered templates, htmx 4 in the admin panel
  • Mapbox with custom styles: terrain, 3D view and a layer tray; own JavaScript, no frameworks
  • Parts from Turismo Fuencaliente: the CMS core (login, media, thumbnails), route tracing by sections and the map popups

The Story

This is my second project with Gustavo, after Herrumbre Vivo Arte. The idea was to take the sculptures out onto the paths and use the site to find them on the island. I did not start from zero: the CMS core, the route tracing and the map popups come from the Fuencaliente tourism site. With those parts already tested on a public website, the new work went into what belongs to CaminArte alone: the 3D view, the artworks and the API.
